Son, uncle, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, “the nicest man you’ve ever met”, John Patterson Slayton finished his story on July 18, 2023.
He was the youngest of 7 siblings born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Traveling by Greyhound Bus, the youngest four children and their mother joined family in Corvallis, Oregon when he was a young boy. They moved to Portland where he graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1945 and joined the Navy just as World War II was ending. He served as a signalman on the aircraft carrier USS Ranger and was discharged in August, 1946.
He returned to Portland, worked as a warehouseman, met and married Donnella Rousseau in 1949. They moved back to Corvallis and he graduated from the Oregon State School of Pharmacy in 1954. He worked for Frank Nau Pharmacy and then purchased Cole’s Drug in the Gateway area. He moved the business to the San Rafael Pharmacy and later joined in partnership with Menlo Park Pharmacy where he worked until retirement.
John and Donnella would have celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary on July 29th. A beloved grandson, Shea Slayton preceded him. He is survived by Donnella and their two sons, Stan (Debbie) and Don (Sara) and two daughters, Darian and Laura (Steve), seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, August 6, 2023, at 2:00p.m. at Gresham Memorial Chapel
