Gladys Mast April 24, 1939 - April 19, 2024

Gladys Mae (Swartzendruber) Mast, passed away Friday, April 19th 2024, at age 84 following a stroke. She was born on April 24th, 1939 in Washington County, Iowa to Emanuel and Lena (Miller) SwartzendruberThe fourth of ten children, she graduated from Iowa Mennonite High School in 1957.

On August 6, 1959, she married Moses Mast in Kalona, Iowa. In 1960, as adventurous newlyweds, they traveled to Oregon and together made it home for nearly 60 years; living in the Portland, Lebanon, Jefferson, and Albany areas. She moved to live with her oldest daughter in January of 2021, making Gresham her home at the end of her life.

Caregiving was Gladys’ true gift and passion. She worked as a CNA first at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland. After the birth of her two daughters, she worked in the home as mother and homemaker. She returned to work as a school bus driver, then later again as a CNA at Good Samaritan, this time in Corvallis. She eventually retired from Mennonite Home after almost 15 years in their Medical Records department.

She was a member of the Mennonite church and wholly dedicated to her faith in Christ. She was a warm and social individual who loved outdoor walks and neighborly chats, as well as gardening, reading, and family games. She was an excellent listener and avid letter writer, always intentional and invested in building her relationships with family and friends. She was an exceptionally positive woman with kind words to say about and to those around her.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Moses; parents; infant daughter, Rebecca Kim; and five of her nine siblings.

She is survived by her daughters Bethany McCurley of Gresham and Debra (Michael) Boydston of Eugene. She was a wonderfully involved grandmother to her four granddaughters, Stephanie McCurley Mason (Ben) of Castro Valley, CA, Kayla McCurley of Portland, Alyssa McCurley of Eugene, and Breanna Boydston of Eugene. She was also known as Great-Grandma Gladys by Elliot and Kurt McCurley Mason; as well as many much-loved nieces, nephews and cousins.
