Evelyn Marie Sutphin (aka Peg), 95, of Springfield, departed this life on Wednesday, December 5, 2018, at her daughter’s home in Portland, Oregon surrounded by her loving family.
Evelyn was born on March 29, 1923, in Grand Island, Nebraska the daughter of Frederick and Esther Phillips Schroeder. She attended Farmersville High School and graduated in 1940. She married her best friend and soulmate Wayne M. Sutphin on May 8, 1942 in St. Louis, MO. Immediately after their wedding Wayne was shipped off to World War II out of Union Station in St. Louis. During the war Evelyn worked at a munition plant in Illiopolis. When Wayne returned from the war they settled in Springfield Illinois where together they built their dream home in Leland Grove. In July of 1946 they welcomed their only daughter, Penelope Aleea Sutphin. Wayne built Evelyn a beauty shop in the back of their home where she worked as a beautician for over 60 years.
Wayne proceeded her in death on August 11, 1990. And after that Evelyn split her time between Springfield and Portland, Oregon where her daughter Penny and her family lived, taking an active role in the lives of her grandchildren and eventually her great-grandchildren.
She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Springfield and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and making Jesus signs. You knew Evelyn loved you when she gave you one of her Jesus signs, but she would also hand them out to strangers she would meet along her day. She sent those signs all over the United Stated to other Lutheran churches as a way to reach people who didn’t know Jesus as their Lord and Savior and to bring comfort to the lost.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Helen Eliason; and brother, Fred Schroeder, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Penny (David) Carstens of Portland, OR; grandchildren, Holly Noelle (Kobie) Keeton of Fairview, OR and Jason Wayne Carstens of Portland, OR; great-grandchildren, Marcus, Kannon, and Kaleeah; and several nieces and nephews.
