Evelyn was born on March 29, 1923, in Grand Island, Nebraska the daughter of Frederick and Esther Phillips Schroeder. She attended Farmersville High School and graduated in 1940. She married her best friend and soulmate Wayne M. Sutphin on May 8, 1942 in St. Louis, MO. Immediately after their wedding Wayne was shipped off to World War II out of Union Station in St. Louis. In July of 1946 they welcomed their only daughter, Penelope Aleea Sutphin. Wayne built Evelyn a beauty shop in the back of their home where she worked as a beautician for over 60 years.

She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Springfield and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and making Jesus signs. You knew Evelyn loved you when she gave you one of her Jesus signs, but she would also hand them out to strangers she would meet along her day. She sent those signs all over the United Stated to other Lutheran churches as a way to reach people who didn’t know Jesus as their Lord and Savior and to bring comfort to the lost.
