Edward D. Schmunk February 18, 1930 - January 29, 2024

Edward Donald Schmunk was born February 18, 1930 in Windsor, Colorado and was the third of four children born to George and Mary Schmunk. His family relocated to Portland, Oregon in 1942. He graduated from Benson High School in 1948. He eventually fought in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1956, but remained in Air Force active reserve until 1960. In 1968, Edward enlisted in the Oregon Air National Guard until retiring from PANG base in 1988.

After retiring, Edward “Ed” worked part-time delivering lunches to Gresham area schools. In 1998 he began working at Barlow High School serving lunches until fully retiring in 2013. Ed loved serving the staff and students, many of whom would often stop and chat with him long after their graduation.

One of Eds’ favorite activities was fishing, a love he instilled in his sons. Having a servant’s heart, he served as coach of his sons’ baseball team and with the Lions and The Elks.

Edward passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on January 29th surrounded by his loving family. We will never forget his kind heart, sense of humor and his ever-present positive attitude and smile.

Edward was preceded in death by his first wife, Elnora (Knaub), his second wife, Marjorie (Hays) and son, Russell Hosey. He has four surviving children: Nancy Cooper, Gregg Schmunk, Tom Schmunk, and Sherrill Martin, as well as 10 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Edward’s life will be held at Gresham Memorial Chapel Sunday, February 18, 2024 at 1:30pm. All are welcome.

The family suggest contributions be made to the Gresham Elks Lodge.
