Donald Tohlen November 29, 1927 - May 8, 2024

Don was born in Portland, Oregon on November 29, 1927, to Charles John Tohlen and Delfreda Herta Tohlen. He was raised on love and Swedish pancakes.

Don spoke fondly of his youthful adventures there (sledding down Dead Man’s Hill was a favorite) and in the countryside a bit south toward McMinnville, where he worked some summers on a relative’s farm, and rode the occasional horse. After graduating from Grant High School, he joined the army, and served in pre-war Korea. He later joined the Air Force Reserve and was called up to active duty when the Korean War began, stationed at McChord Air Force Base. Back in Portland, he met the love of his life, Lois Irene Hoke, dancing at the Palais Royale. They married, and raised three children, taking them on car trips all over the west, camping, playing cards, with dad making up stories to tell the kids at bedtime. Don retired early from a career in the Postal Service, and thus had quite the extended retirement, dancing with Lois, traveling more, taking the kids and grandchildren to Twanoh, teaching all to waterski, playing Hearts and eating grandma’s popcorn every night.

He was proud of his Swedish heritage, painted his house Swedish red, and sang in the Swedish choir for a number of years. Don was a long-time and active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, just a few doors down the street. Always the gentleman, Don spent his last years at Hearthstone, where he enjoyed the company of many new friends, and the affection of many of the staff. Don passed away peacefully on May 8, 2024. Don is survived by his three children, Charles (Ann), Nancy (Michael), Eric (Shannon) and many beloved grand children and great-grandchildren.
